I have had the pleasure of staying here for about four weeks and counting now, and have had a mostly positive experience. The following key points have stood out during my stay. 😎 Safety: located walking distance from the historic Hollywood BVLD, the hostel promotes safety as one of its main draws. It attempts to deliver on promotional promise by being equipped with operational cameras in the front, back of the house and outside of the male and female dormitories on its first and second flights. A firehouse at the corner of the hostel adds an additional level of peace of mind! Diversity: The California is a home away from home for an array of guests with diverse backgrounds, including travelers from Latin America, Japan, Canada and even Russia! 🇯🇵 🇨🇦 🇲🇽 🇷🇺 The diversity is a phenomenal breath of fresh air given the current political climate in the states. 👍 Price: At about 30/night or $200 weekly, it’s a fair deal for the location. Cons: there have been concerns from other guests about the host and impromptu cancellations; however, I haven’t had any issues. The hostess, Leti, has also done a phenomenal job so far at being available for any concerns. Overall 8/10.

I rarely leave negative reviews, but this experience genuinely shocked me. During my previous stay, the owner approached me and said that my feet smelled and that other guests had complained. This was deeply embarrassing and handled in a way that felt unnecessary and humiliating. I showered daily, maintained proper hygiene, and even placed my shoes outside at the owner’s request. Despite complying fully, I was made to feel singled out and uncomfortable. That alone would have been unpleasant but manageable. What is completely unacceptable is what happened next. I booked again for tonight. The booking was confirmed. Only later did they realise it was me and then messaged to say I was no longer allowed to stay — effectively cancelling at the last minute and leaving me stranded without accommodation. Cancelling a confirmed booking because you recognise a guest is unprofessional and irresponsible. Doing so on the same day of arrival shows a complete lack of basic hospitality standards. Whatever their concerns were, they had every opportunity to decline the booking in advance. Confirming and then withdrawing once they realised who I was is discriminatory and demonstrates poor managem

Great location close to metro station that connects you to the entire city, super friendly owners and rooms have good air conditioning. Kitchen has everything that's needed and there are many bathrooms so there's always at least one that's free. I can't recommend enough :)

Great place to stay. It's close to walk of fame, host is polite and he lives there so he is available for support. The rooms have AC and a balcony, easy access to the house using eletronic lock only. 3 bathrooms, kitchen and not too many people, so it's a quiet place do be. There's no big locker's in the room if you like to use it but there's small lockers in the common area.
