As far as bookstore "miles of shelving" brags go, Through the Fold comes up pretty short (puns always intended). But what this shipping container of a shop hidden in the garden of Mission Hills Nursery lacks in size, it more than makes up for in heart, vibes, and warm, personal customer service. Owned by a mother-daughter team who began creating the store's community even while they were still building the thing with their own hands, TTF hosts several regular monthly book clubs, a weekly story time/craft for toddlers and preschoolers, yoga classes, book swaps, and a seemingly unending stream of parties and one-off events, meaning that all ages and types of readers and hopeless TBR-buyers can find a place there. Jen and Gail are both incredibly knowledgeable (and delightfully opinionated) about their stock, and if you're looking for a book they aren't currently carrying, they'll order it for you* and occasionally provide you with an emailed saga of your book's journey across the land while you wait for it to arrive. There's also something to be said for the smaller space, for those of us who like to go into bookstores to browse, but get quickly overwhelmed by the sheer number of b

I love stopping by Through the Fold whenever I'm in Mission Hills. Tucked inside Mission Hills Nursery, it's the perfect excuse to browse the books, wander through the plants, and, ideally, sip a coffee while doing both. Jen always has a thoughtful recommendation, and I almost never leave empty-handed. One of my favorite things they offer is the Blind Date with a Book—wrapped and ready to go, making it such an easy, unique gift for a friend (or yourself!). Jen also introduced me to Libro.fm for audiobooks. It's a great way to feed my audiobook habit while supporting an independent bookstore. They also host fun youth and adult programs like the Young Authors workshops, book clubs, and summer camps. All fantastic given Jen's background in education. It's one of those hidden gems that makes a neighborhood feel special and welcoming. If you're looking for your next read, a thoughtful gift, or simply a lovely place to wander for a bit, Through the Fold is definitely worth a visit.

This ABSOLUTELY CHARMING bookstore is truly a hidden gem that makes you truly appreciate being a San Diegan. It's nestled inside Kate Sessions historic nursery and one of the only places I can think of where you can buy a book and read it while actually surrounded by our city's beautiful nature, butterflies, and occasional chickens around the premises. It's an ideal spot for book lovers searching for a date or mom-and-me activity/location 😍 Not only is it picturesque, they offer activities throughout the week for kids and adults like arts and crafts, book clubs, cooking, etc. They have a small, yet impactful selection with all the hits and what they don't have you can order from them online and receive it in a short time period, as well as a subscription service via Libro.fm with rates comparable to Audible that support their local business-- vice Amazon. The mom and daughter duo who brought this to life really out did themselves and our community is so much richer thanks to them. My daughter LOVES going their because theres always something different going on and the vibes are on point. Highly recommend!

A great bookstore in the Mission Hills Nursery owned by a mother/ daughter duo who are also educators. They host fun events for young and old. The space is an oasis. Come for the books, stay for the plants! Do you like to read but prefer the convenience of an e-book? No problem - check them out on bookshop or libro if you want audio. 📕 📚🪴
