For a place to eat or drink, the questions that matter most are simple: is it open now, how long is the wait at peak hours, and does the menu suit the group you are bringing. American restaurants typically run lunch and dinner services with a quieter stretch in between, coffee shops open early, and many kitchens close earlier on Sunday. Cards and tap-to-pay are accepted almost everywhere, a tip of 15-20% is customary for table service, and sales tax is added at the register.

My husband and I were looking for a new breakfast place to try out and found Cocina de Barrio! I can’t believe we’ve never been here before and I’m glad we were able to try it out. On a Sunday morning, we were able to get a seat for two right away. Parking/environment: As with any other North Park establishment, dedicate extra time to look for street parking especially if it’s a busy time. Modern vibes inside filled with beautiful plants and flowers all around. Plenty of tables all around and it looks like a bigger party can fit. My only complaint is that our two person table was back to back with other tables so it felt tight and stuffy. Food: The portions are huge and our eyes were hungrier than we were. We wanted to share a sweet entry and ordered two savory ones on top of that. We had too much leftovers as the dishes were very filling. Next time, we’ll only get one savory and one sweet. -Chilaquilles Rojos ($22.95): crispy tortillas even when slathered with red sauce. Topped with chicken tinga and an egg. -Enmoladas ($22.95): 3 corn tortillas filled with braised short ribs topped with mole and fried egg, served with beans and potatoes. So delicious but very filling! -Churro F

We ate here twice during our trip to San Diego and the food and service were amazing both times! Their dishes are beautiful and so yummy. The portions are also a good size and my fiance and I shared two dishes each time. Will definitely be coming back when we visit again!

Warm friendly staff with a tasty, not so standard menu. They specialize in Oaxaca cuisine and are very helpful with the choices. We had the Birria tacos followed by an unfamiliar to us corn bread dessert we really liked. The food was excellent. Highly recommend!

Highly recommend! We came for brunch around 1 PM on a Sunday and didn’t have to wait for a seat. The staff was really kind and our server Maria was a delight! She was welcoming, made excellent recommendations when we were torn between choices, and was able to highlight the Oaxaca cuisine versus more widespread ones. We got the portobello mushroom tacos, and the huevos rancheros with lamb, a Bloody Mary, and the Barrio coffee (sweet, flavorful), which were all delicious and had large portions. The tortillas were fresh, too! As someone who eats plant based, I really appreciated the plant based sections in the menu and the fact that they offer vegan cheese. Will be back!

I really love this place for brunch lunch. I had the rib with chile verde. Their food is very Oaxaca style. Love the mix of flavors. Their pie de elote was super yummy.
