About Mission Basilica San Diego de Alcalá

The Mission San Diego de Alcalá is California’s first mission and was founded on July 16, 1769 by St. Junípero Serra, a Franciscan priest. The Mission was relocated to the present site in 1774 in order to be closer to the American Indian (Kumeyaay) villages, a reliable source of water, and good land for farming. The present mission church was named a minor basilica by Pope Paul VI in the bicentennial year of 1976. Today, it serves as an active parish for the Catholic community and as a cultural center for people of all faiths who are most welcome to visit the mission. Self-guided tours, docent-led tours, and a gift shop all help to make your visit a memorable one.

Staff was friendly when purchasing tickets and gifts from the shop. Took my family about 1hr 45 mins to look at everything. We took our time and read so much information and even stayed till 12pm foe the bells to ring. Bought a mission passport because my kids bucket list is to visit every mission in California. Worth the visit.

I've attended the 12pm mass here 3 times now and I love it. The Mission choir is spectacular. This is the second Mission I've visited, it's quite smaller than the one in San Juan Capistrano but still very pretty.

We visited Mission Basilica and it was a good place to stop and get a sense of the history and the church architecture. It is peaceful and worth a short visit, but the site is not very big and there is not too much to see inside, so you do not need a lot of time there.

Beautiful Mission, very clean. It is very interesting to learn the history behind this mission. Loved what was at the gift shop such as rosaries, prayer books, saint prayers and crosses. Nice cashiers!

Went to Sunday morning mass here. I felt welcome and enjoyed the service and the priest very much. A taste of history I hadn’t prepared for when I visited San Diego. Must visit for every east coast Catholic!

Another superb example of California life in the 1700s. Beautiful grounds, architecture, and a church built in 1931 to replace four earlier ones. The most interesting attraction is the excellent free museum in the back, off the central garden, with lots of detailed information, maps, and artifacts. There is also a typical gift shop with all the requisite trapping and trinkets.
