About Salt & Straw

Our first San Diego shop joins the city’s historic Little Italy, a vibrant and colorful neighborhood that was once the center of San Diego’s tuna fishing industry in the 1920s. Today, Little Italy’s harborside blocks are home to a fast-growing food and drink scene that we’re honored to be a part of. A few blocks from Waterfront Park and the Embarcadero, our scoop shop adds a little bit of local sweet to India Street, so grab a scoop or three and explore the neighborhood gems, from the Mercato Farmers Market to the Maritime Museum of San Diego.

San Diego is in California, on the West Coast, where the climate ranges from foggy coast to hot inland valleys, wildfire season can affect air quality in late summer, and traffic is the main thing to plan around. Getting around San Diego is easiest by car; street parking is metered in busy downtown areas, and most suburban businesses have their own lot. Ride-share apps such as Uber and Lyft operate across California's larger cities, and public transit varies from extensive to minimal.

Salt & Straw really does have some amazing ice cream. Even in such touristy and high traffic areas, they continue their great standards of quality through their ice cream and service. We ordered a couple cones with Double vanilla, Blackberry birthday cake, and the lavender. All are tasty, rich, creamy, and not overly sweet. The blackberry birthday cake was the top choice for us this time! The vanilla is a bold enhancement on a classic, and the lavender is floral and fruity.

Category: Ice Cream Shop. One of the bartenders at Vincenzo recommended this shop with super unique ice cream flavors. We didn’t need to read beyond the first line of the sidewalk sandwich sign advertising the daily specials to know we would leave the shop with a cup of Chocolate Malted Potato Chip Cupcake, which loaded chocolate-glazed cupcake and chocolate-covered potato chips into malted chocolate milk ice cream. It was deeply chocolatey and crunchy from the cupcakes and crunchy in a different way from the potato chips. The other flavors were equally wild. When we arrived there was a line out the door but the bartender who recommended the place said the line is often wrapped around the corner. So we were lucky. As we sat on the small bench enjoying our ice cream, the line remained steady and out the door to the corner. YouTube’s Chef’s Apprentice

A must ice cream spot! The flavors are so original and absolutely delicious — you can really tell they put thought into creating something special. It was my first time visiting, and the girls working there were amazing. They were so kind and took their time showing me the different flavors and helping me choose, which made the whole experience even more enjoyable.

Go sample the strange flavors and get a scoop (or two) of what you love! $6.95 for a single scoop seems steep but this place has very unique flavors and high quality ice cream. The employees were happy to let me try the seasonal flavors before I finally decided on Chocolate Gooey Brownie (my all time favorite). They really cram brownies into this ice cream, so each bite is brownie-filled. Perfect for chocolate-lovers. The line can get backed up with large groups of people wanting to sample, but it’s worth the wait. A friend of mine tried the “Ice Cream Taco” and was underwhelmed at the size but pleasantly surprised by the flavor and accompanying sauces. Another option is to split a scoop into two different flavors which is awesome and only an additional $0.50. Really fun stop in Little Italy for those who like odd flavor combinations (and also those who like traditional flavors- they have those too). Somehow, Salt & Straw makes it work. Parking in Little Italy is quite a nightmare, so I recommend finding a spot in the Bankers Hill neighborhood and walking down.
