About Awaken Church | BALBOA CAMPUS

Awaken Church started in 2005 when our lead pastors Jurgen and Leanne Matthesius moved their small family away from friends, family, and familiarity to plant a church on the other side of the world from all they knew. From humble beginnings meeting in hotels, school gymnasiums, performing arts centers, and at one point a hotel parking lot, Awaken Church has grown from being just a vision in Ps. Jurgen and Ps. Leanne’s hearts to now being a multi-campus and multi-generational church seeing lives changed and impacted every week.

We focus on showing everyone the love, redemption, and salvation of Jesus Christ by caring passionately about people and connecting them to the one true God.

Great location, great leadership team and lots of fun events. Accusations of "prosperity gospel" are likely the result of cognitive bias. The leadership does not embrace a leftist socialist worldview and occasionally this is revealed from the pulpit. If you want to just go to church and leave the same way you came, hit up your local Lutheran facility. If you want to witness the power of Jesus, come to Awaken.

My first visit and I liked it. Great worship and a good message. Yes, they do focus on tithing more than the average church and the media seems to have shed some negative light on them in the past for different things, but the people were friendly and inviting. They are very patriotic and pro military(which I like )I personally prefer a straight non denominational Calvary/ Maranatha Chapel type church, but I enjoyed the service .

Worst experience I have ever had in a church. The security guard is not a man of God. His job is to secure the church not unwelcome guest.

As I entered your doors today, the Security stopped in mid conversation and approached me not only did he look me up and down. He asked if I’ve been there before and told me he didn’t recognize my face. I told him I didn’t recognize his face either and I’ve been to awakened multiple times. As I went into church today I felt the message to be strong, but it didn’t hold the same meaning as the man who greeted me as I walked in as I left church today, I stopped, and I informed him the security guard of how I felt during our encounter this morning. He started to get very upset and told me about his past titles of employment and how he was just securing I informed him that I didn’t feel safe or welcomed when he spoke to me. I informed him that in the future, he should continue doing his job, but in a way to where someone does not feel as I did today instead of being humble and warm hearted as in the message it stated today he began to get aggressive in words, elevating his tone voice, and then told me that I did not have to attend this church again. I informed him that he didn’t own the church and that simply I was sharing with him how he made me felt I did not raise my voice nor did I

This church is far too loud. Children were running around, screaming in the halls, totally tone deaf, and couldn’t hear people telling them to stop it. They know that it’s too loud, and they offer hearing plugs at the entrance. There was an armed security guard at the entrance. There was five people standing in the coffee shop and they wouldn’t let me have a coffee. I don’t know why they were standing there. I guess maybe to give coffee to their friends only nobody offered to pray for me or greeted me, and I was just hoping they would offer to pray for me because I know somebody that needs prayer

It is December 31, 2025, and I was looking for a church to bring 2026 in and this place has to be a front! I went to the website and not one mention of Christ or any references to the Holy Bible. It’s scary how many locations they have, all of which mimicking the other. This is more of a spirituality and community connection facility not a house of God. Which, I’m not mad at, just don’t call it a CHRISTIAN CHURCH! Sadly I will not be visiting because I don’t need another fake β€œchurch” leading me down a path away from Jesus Christ my Lord and Savior! Maybe it’s better in person, but the photos, websites, and reviews are plenty for me to stand clear of. If you like to check this place out on your own, best of luck and God bless.

Awaken Church is exactly what we don’t need more of. I went there and right away they ask for money. I kid you not when I went there a lady shared her testimony of how her family gave everything they have and they received a 3 bedroom house. Their two bedroom house was not enough and they wanted a three bedroom house here in San Diego and felt that if they gave more donations to the church they would be blessed. Also to mention they are anti LGBT. Jesus would love others no matter what. This place is a joke and Jesus would not like to see these evangelical churches making millions a year while thousands of people here in San Diego are homeless or food insecure.

The best Christian Church in San Diego, a church that speaks the true written in the Bible without fear, full of the Holly Spirit and with so my love to spread. I feel so loved and welcomed, I was treated like family. I’m grateful to find this church. πŸ™πŸ»β€οΈ
