For a place to eat or drink, the questions that matter most are simple: is it open now, how long is the wait at peak hours, and does the menu suit the group you are bringing. American restaurants typically run lunch and dinner services with a quieter stretch in between, coffee shops open early, and many kitchens close earlier on Sunday. Cards and tap-to-pay are accepted almost everywhere, a tip of 15-20% is customary for table service, and sales tax is added at the register.
Hours are published for 7 days a week. The most common schedule is 7 am–4 pm. Hours in the United States do change around federal holidays and long weekends, so a quick call before a special trip is sensible. No phone number is listed for this business, so the Google Maps link on this page is the best route for directions and any contact details Google has on file. Its website is genteelcoffee.com, where you may find menus, price lists or booking options.
Customers rate it 4.7 out of 5 on Google across 375 reviews, placing it among the better-regarded cafes & coffee shops in San Diego.
San Diego is in California, on the West Coast, where the climate ranges from foggy coast to hot inland valleys, wildfire season can affect air quality in late summer, and traffic is the main thing to plan around. Getting around San Diego is easiest by car; street parking is metered in busy downtown areas, and most suburban businesses have their own lot. Ride-share apps such as Uber and Lyft operate across California's larger cities, and public transit varies from extensive to minimal.

Everyone here is so sweet and nice :) I always get the cold brew, I plan on trying other things soon. But the cold brew is pretty solid compared to a lot of places in San Diego. It gives such an interesting flavor profile. A good coffee flavor, But it’s like you can taste all the notes that come inside of the type of beans they used to make the cold brew. I normally like a strong acidic one, But this one gives so much more than just a basic cold brew too. Very refreshing. I just wish they would sell it in a 20 ounce haha. 🤍

I really loved the atmosphere here. The perfect spot to sit by the window, watch the traffic go by, and get some thinking done. The barista was incredibly knowledgeable and took the time to chat about the nuances of cappuccinos and 'shorts.' I ended up ordering a 'dry short' and it was fantastic. Highly recommend if you're looking for a great brew and a space to clear your head!

One of the best cups of coffee we had during our time in San Diego! It was so good that we came back the next day. I wanted to try one of the Charcoal syrups but also wanted a cold brew. coffee. The barista was so kind in letting me know that those two don't pair well and offered other suggestions. I was so thankful he didn't let me order something that he knew wouldn't work. My husband ordered a lemonade cold brew and said it was husband favorite one he had ever had. We loved it so much that we got a bag to bring home with us. This place is a gem!

This is one of my favorite coffee shops in the neighborhood. I actually discovered it by accident when I couldn’t find a seat at Communal down the street, and I’m so glad I did, I’ve been back multiple times since. The staff is incredibly friendly and welcoming, and the café has such a cozy, inviting vibe. They have a bar-style seating area that’s great for studying or working, along with some outdoor tables. It’s become one of my go-to spots to get work done. Their latte is a solid 10/10 every time. I’d highly recommend this place!

Genteel Coffee Roasters serves coffee with good flavor, though the overall experience has its ups and downs. Their soda coffee drinks are unique, and whether you enjoy them will depend on your individual taste. Parking is limited and stressful, and street noise can disrupt what should be a quiet, relaxing atmosphere. The staff were average in service and appeared somewhat unprofessional, with visible piercings and less-than-polished grooming, though they were not rude. The café could use more attention to cleanliness—dirty vents raise major concerns about air quality and maintenance—though the bathroom was clean and well-maintained. Outside, the plants attract a noticeable number of flies. The view isn’t very good, and the café is located in a somewhat run-down area, which detracts from the overall experience. Overall, the coffee itself is enjoyable, but the parking, noise, outdoor flies, staff impressions, and location make it a visit to weigh carefully.
