Overall nice place to visit once in a while Summary:if you want to go for the Top Gun experience and just want American Barbecue this is the place. If you want a spectacular/more hospitable spot I would reccomend leaving the downtown area and finding a smaller mom and pop shop Food--was pretty good. I had the barbecue brisket (pork) sandwich and the pulled pork plate. Meat was high quality and cooked well. My biggest critique would be most of the flavor was reliant on the barbecue sauce (meat lacked the substence). Fries were really good and had a nice texture/good ratio of salt. I have had American Barbecue before (including multiple different areas around the South) and this place given its location (touristy area downtown) holds up but if it was in Oklahoma the food would need to step its game up (in flavor and proportions-->were (ful)filling and worked well but always room for improvement) Service--was fine. Nothing spectacular. Servers got the job done, and were extremely busy (given I went around Sdcc). Atmosphere-->the bar seems to have some spirit with the bartender (as a spectator). Otherwise, atmosphere heavily piggybacks off of the Top Gun vibe which is unique and coo

Just came by for a beer. The shooting of top gun happened here in 1985 and it's what they market on. It's a dive bar with BBQ other than that. Parking to get here is TERRIBLE. Take the trolley to Seaport Village Station and you cannot miss it. It is also a short walk from the convention center, hotels and gaslamp. Some pretty cool historical stuff from the movie and general military memorabilia. Worth a visit.

We stopped by Kansas City Barbeque (the famous β€œTop Gun Bar”) after the Padres game on Sunday. The Top Gun memorabilia and nostalgia were definitely the highlight and made it a fun place to visit. Unfortunately, the service didn’t match the atmosphere. We sat down and no one came to take our order, so I eventually had to flag down a waitress, who said someone would be over. When no one ever came, she ended up taking our drink order herself. After our drinks were delivered, no one checked back with us, so we weren’t able to order another round. When we decided to leave, we once again had to track someone down just to get our bill. I’m glad we only stopped in for drinks, because the service made it clear that staying for a meal probably wouldn’t have been a great experience. If you’re a Top Gun fan, it’s worth stopping by to soak in the history and memorabilia, but hopefully the service improves.

Kansas City Barbeque is a small restaurant/ bar that movie Top Gun was filmed in back in the day. The "great balls of fire" bar scene was filmed here and the piano is still there. Its a small place that is really fun. We stayed at the hyatt next door so we came here few times. The wings are good, the beer is cold and the atmosphere is fantastic. Seems everyone that comes in has that same spirit that was portrayed in the movie. The prices are good and they don't price gouge just because its a touristy place and really is relaxed and fun.

I'm more of fan of TG2 but Top Gun is Top Gun. We stayed at the Grand Hyatt across the street during Christmas and came over with kids for dinner one night. Speaking of timing, both TG and TG2 were playing on TV the night before so I prepped my kids about the restaurant. The price was very friendly for a touristy city and a landmark. Flavor wise not the top KC BBQ, but pretty good. Brisket was the best out of the things we ordered, follow by the ribs.
