Walking into the Mingei International Museum in San Diego’s Balboa Park completely redefined my understanding of art and everyday life. I was immediately taken aback by how the historic building opens up into a breathtaking, sun-drenched modern pavilion, with a vibrant Dale Chihuly glass chandelier glowing overhead. What truly amazed me was the profound philosophy behind the exhibitions, celebrating "the art of the people" (mingei) through an astonishing collection of over 30,000 global objects. Seeing the immense care, soul, and timeless beauty poured into functional items—ranging from exquisite Japanese pottery to intricate textiles made by ordinary hands—felt deeply moving and caught me completely by surprise.In all the galleries, I was most captivated by the marine-themed "To Catch a Fish" exhibition. It takes that sense of wonder to an entirely new level by turning human survival and global craftsmanship into a beautiful, cross-cultural love letter to the ocean. LOVED. Armadillo exhibit downstairs was amazing, cute and diverse materials. Furniture exhibit upstairs wasnt my thing. Outdoor patio upstairs. Very beautiful library upstairs as well! Definitely look through! Can only check out for art research. I came in between exhibit set upstairs so that was all. Cool gift shop, really interesting items and books sold. Restaurant downstairs as well!
