About Timken Museum of Art

Affectionately known as the “jewel box” of fine art, the Timken is home to the Putnam Foundation’s world-class collection of European and American masterpieces and Russian icons. Artists represented include Rembrandt, Rubens, Fragonard, Bierstadt, Pieter Bruegel the Elder, John Singleton Copley, and Eastman Johnson.

Designed by San Diego architect John Mock for Frank L. Hope and Associates, the museum building is considered one of the most important examples of mid-century southern California modernism, and one of the finest regional examples of the International Style in the United States. One of the only free museums in Southern California, the Timken Museum is committed to art accessibility within our local communities.

The Timken Museum of Art is a truly wonderful place to visit. Though intimate in size, it contains an impressive collection of artwork that reflects centuries of creativity, history, and human expression. The galleries are peaceful and beautifully arranged, allowing visitors to take their time and appreciate each piece. I especially enjoyed the quiet atmosphere, which made the experience feel personal and meaningful. Art has a unique way of connecting us to people and stories across generations, and this museum does that beautifully. Whether you are an art enthusiast or simply curious, I highly recommend visiting. It is a hidden gem in Balboa Park and well deserving of five stars.

Great free admission art museum. Favorite part when we went on Sunday was the live concert by local pianists which was awesome. Comfortable couches, not very crowded.

Timken Museum of Art is a free admission art museum in Balboa Park. I was told about this hidden gem from a very sweet uber driver I met! It is small but mighty. The staff was really nice and it was a nice peaceful start to my Balboa Park visit. If you have a love for art and looking for a tree activity I would recommend.
