San Francisco is in California, on the West Coast, where the climate ranges from foggy coast to hot inland valleys, wildfire season can affect air quality in late summer, and traffic is the main thing to plan around. Traffic in San Francisco peaks on weekday mornings and afternoons, so allow extra time then. Addresses read from the street number up to the city, state abbreviation and five-digit ZIP code; the map link on this page shows the exact spot.

PIER 39 is definitely one of the places you should visit when traveling to San Francisco. The atmosphere is lively, colorful, and full of energy, with plenty of restaurants, shops, street performers, and beautiful waterfront views. The highlight for me was definitely the famous sea lions. Watching them bark, play, and compete for space on the docks was both funny and unforgettable. The views of the San Francisco Bay and Alcatraz Island are also fantastic, making this a great place for taking photos and enjoying a relaxing walk. There are plenty of food options, although prices can be a little higher because it is such a popular tourist destination. It can also get quite crowded, especially during weekends and peak hours. Overall, PIER 39 is touristy, but in a fun and enjoyable way. I would especially recommend it to first-time visitors, families, and anyone who wants to experience the classic San Francisco waterfront atmosphere. It is definitely worth a visit!

Pier 39 is the heart of San Francisco’s waterfront and one of those places that truly has something for everyone. From the moment you arrive, you’re surrounded by incredible energy, stunning bay views, street performers, unique shops, fantastic restaurants, and the famous sea lions that make this place so iconic. What I loved most was the atmosphere—it’s vibrant, exciting, and full of life from morning until evening. Every corner offers a new experience, whether you’re enjoying fresh seafood, shopping for souvenirs, watching live entertainment, or simply taking in the breathtaking views of Alcatraz, the Golden Gate Bridge, and the San Francisco Bay. It’s the perfect destination for families, couples, and solo travelers alike. You can easily spend an entire day here without getting bored. If you’re visiting San Francisco for the first time, Pier 39 isn’t just another attraction—it’s an essential experience. It’s where the city’s charm, beauty, and energy all come together. Without a doubt, one of the highlights of my California trip, and a place I’ll return to every time I visit.

It’s a very pleasant tourist place. There are many activities here: aquarium with amazing water tunnel, see lions colony to watch their life, many nice shops and restaurants and also massage equipment ( no clothes take out need). Must visit place.

Amazing place! I'd definitely come back to this pier because it has everything that you don't even know you need... from coffee shops to restaurants and amazing views to the Alcatraz island and the golden gate bridge! There are shops where you can conveniently get souvenirs as a tourist as well

Pier 39 is easily one of my favorite spots in all of San Francisco — it’s vibrant, fun, and there’s always something happening. One of the best ways to get there is by water taxi from other parts of the waterfront, which I highly recommend. It saves you the long walk and gives you a really nice approach through the marina area with all the boats (Fisherman’s Wharf/harbour area), which adds to the whole experience. Once you arrive, the atmosphere is incredible. It’s such a great place to walk around, with tons of shops ranging from souvenir and gift stores to jewelry boutiques. There’s also a small amusement-style area with a beautiful antique carousel, plus live performances and an arcade, which makes it fun for all ages. Food options are everywhere — from casual bites to full restaurants — so it’s easy to spend a few hours here without getting bored. Whether you’re with family, friends, your partner, or even exploring solo, there’s something for everyone. A major highlight is the sea lions just around the corner on their platforms. They’re honestly so entertaining to watch and add something really unique to the experience. The views are also amazing, especially looking out to
