About The Wise Ox Butcher & Deli
Born out of a love of the classic butcher shop, The Wise Ox offers the same premium meats, like-minded purveyors, and quality products we use across Trust Restaurant Group. A small but mighty sandwich menu speaks to Chef Brad Wise’s dedication to the medium. Seven perfect sandwiches, each better than the last. Don’t miss the Philly Cheesesteak. Or the Turkey. Or the Bologna… don’t miss any of them, really.

For a place to eat or drink, the questions that matter most are simple: is it open now, how long is the wait at peak hours, and does the menu suit the group you are bringing. American restaurants typically run lunch and dinner services with a quieter stretch in between, coffee shops open early, and many kitchens close earlier on Sunday. Cards and tap-to-pay are accepted almost everywhere, a tip of 15-20% is customary for table service, and sales tax is added at the register.
Hours are published for 7 days a week. On most of those days it is open 10 am–5 pm. Hours in the United States do change around federal holidays and long weekends, so a quick call before a special trip is sensible. The listed phone number is (619) 564-8976. Many businesses also reply to text messages on the same number if it is a cell phone. More information is available on its website, thewiseoxsd.com.
On Google it holds a rating of 4.5 out of 5 from 396 reviews, which is a strong result for a butcher in San Diego and suggests consistent service.
San Diego is in California, on the West Coast, where the climate ranges from foggy coast to hot inland valleys, wildfire season can affect air quality in late summer, and traffic is the main thing to plan around. US addresses list the street number and name, then the city, state abbreviation and ZIP code, and San Diego follows the same pattern; a suite or apartment number such as Ste 200 refers to a unit inside the building. The map link on this page shows the exact spot.

This was my first time at The Wise Ox Butcher & Deli, and it absolutely will not be my last! We tried the Philly Cheesesteak, Double Cheeseburger, and Beef Fat Fries, and everything was extremely delicious. The Philly Cheesesteak was hands down my favorite Philly I have ever had, and the Double Cheeseburger was easily one of the best burgers of my life. You can really taste the quality in every bite. The Beef Fat Fries were perfectly crispy, flavorful, and the perfect side to go with everything. The Wise Ox completely exceeded my expectations. Amazing food, great flavors, and definitely a spot I will be coming back to again and again. Highly recommend!

The sandwiches are good, but everything is so absurdly overpriced. They barely put anything on the sandwiches and charge $10-$17 for all of them. This is the pitiful “torta”, which was $17. Then there’s the meat. Expect to pay two to three times what you would at a grocer for less of any cut. They have a wall of hot sauces and seasonings and mark everything up 200-300% ( they sell a box of maldon sea salt for $15 when it’s less than $5 at any grocer; costco has the 3lb tub for $15). The bottles of hot sauce are all $15+ and can be found online for half that. The whole place is one big money pit and for no reason whatsoever.

I decided to give The Wise Ox Butcher & Eatery a try after hearing about it multiple times. I’ll start with the positives their meat selection is honestly great. You can tell the quality is there, especially with their cuts and sausages. As for the food, it didn’t quite live up to the hype for me. I tried the double cheeseburger, aged burger, fries, and the Philly cheesesteak. Everything was just okay nothing terrible, but nothing that really stood out either. Overall, it felt like the dishes were lacking seasoning and flavor. If I was the head cook here I wouldn’t let these fries or burgers go out because they were burnt 😭 One thing that stood out (not in a good way) was the fries. We were given two bags, but they were mostly small, broken pieces like the ones in the photo. On top of that, they forgot our cheesesteak order, so we had to drive back to pick it up. I’m giving this place a 3/5 mainly because of the quality of their meat and sausages, but the prepared food and overall experience could definitely be better.

Came here a couple times, tried it once with coworkers and then tried it again myself when I was in the area. First time I ordered a Bologna Sandwich via online order. The bun was amazing and the sandwich was solid but I don't think I am a big bologna fan. The second time I ordered a Dry Aged Burger which had havarti cheese, bacon, house pickles, mayo and mustard. I also ordered Beef Fat Fries with a side of Chiptole Aioli and Thousand Island. This was an in person order and it does take about 15 minutes. The burger was bigger than expected, nice bun as the other sandwich. The Fries had so much flavor I didn't need any of the other sauces. Solid place and would recommend it!

We ordered the cheesesteak burger that was juicy and had that perfect savory, cheesy combo that hits immediately. The pepper turkey sandwich was fresh and balanced, not dry at all, and packed with flavor. From the butcher case, I picked out 2 New York strips and some citrus jerk chicken thighs from their refrigerated section. The quality of the meat looked fresh, well-cut, and beautifully marbled. Service: It was okay. The guy taking our order didn't make much eye contact, and when we asked to choose specific strips from the case, same. Not rude, just not very warm or welcoming. Parking: Limited. There are a few other shops/restaurants on the same corner, so it can be a little competitive finding a spot.
