About Grace Cathedral

Grace Cathedral is the seat of the Bishop of California and we are a warm congregation, the seat of the Diocese of California and a house of prayer for all people.

The cathedral is home to a community where the best of Episcopal tradition courageously embraces innovation and open-minded conversation, where inclusion is expected and people of all faiths are welcomed, where beliefs are put into action and where people are encouraged to seek God and progress on their own spiritual journeys. The cathedral itself, a renowned San Francisco landmark, serves as a magnet, where diverse people gather to worship, celebrate, seek solace, converse and learn.

I’m not religious, but I love visiting churches for their architecture and atmosphere. This one is especially beautifulβ€”the colors, walls, and peaceful setting. Sitting inside while the pianist plays makes the experience even better. One interesting thing: admission is free if you’re there to pray, otherwise you normally have to pay. They asked me at the door, and I honestly said, β€œI’m not here to pray.” They still let me in for free, which was a nice gesture.

Grace Cathedral is, without question, one of the most breathtaking places I've ever visited. I grew up Protestant in the Deep South, so I don't have much of a background in the traditions or architecture of historic cathedrals. Maybe that's part of why walking through those doors left me completely speechless. From the outside, it's an impressive building sitting atop one of San Francisco's famously steep hills. But nothing prepares you for what's waiting inside. The stained glass is simply unbelievable. Everywhere you look, there's another masterpiece that makes you stop in your tracks. The labyrinth at the entrance is a beautiful and peaceful touch that sets the tone before you even step inside. What amazes me most is that a place like this exists in the United States. Every time I'm fortunate enough to visit San Francisco, I make a point of coming back because it fills me with the same sense of awe every single time. Some places are beautiful. Grace Cathedral is unforgettable.

Grace Cathedral is absolutely gorgeous. It is worth paying the entry fee to see this amazing cathedral. It's a self guided tour with very informative information as you make your way around.

gorgeous interiors! we went to the full moon sound bath healing. the walls were beautifully lit, the stained glass is exceptional--it's a real feast for the eyes. the sound bath itself was a bit cacophonic for my sensitive nature but the singing was extremely relaxing and lovely. bring your own mats, blankets and pillows for the best experience you can lie on the floor, giant slumber party style and have a lovely nap or meditation. it's a bit pricey at $25 for 70 minutes, but it's not every day you can lie on the floor of a stunning cathedral, shut your eyes and dream.

I am a San Franciscan and a non-believer, but I occasionally went to this church, actually been going there for more than 20 years. I noticed after the pandemic, the entrance was gated with a not that friendly looking guard, and since then I realized there is a fee without even needing to ask. Do a little google search, it has been charging $12 since 2022 and $14 as of 2026. I have not went inside since. Here are some photos that I took more than 10 years ago of this beautiful church building, or 2013 to be exact. God has always been something off to me, and needing to pay a fee to a church is totally off to me. I will never join the cult.

Grace Cathedral is probably the most beautiful church I have ever been too, with amazing architecture and the beautiful Gothic design. To the side of the cathedral, there is a large open courtyard, displaying a nice water fountain with the same medieval architecture. In addition, the view of the city is very nice from the top of the hill, and parking is not too hard to find.

This was my first time at Grace Cathedral and it was beautiful. Definitely smaller than Notre Dame in Paris. The Aura light show was great! I highly recommend seating far back as to prevent neck strain from looking directly up.

I visited Grace Cathedral for an evening event after dark. The staff greeted me with warm smiles and were helpful and enthusiastic about their roles. The cathedral is awe-inspiring, and I want to return during the daytime to further enjoy the experience. The event added to the visual delight, as the building is breathtaking on its own, and the light show truly brought it to life. My favorite scenes were the garden and cloud displays, but each one captivated my attention throughout the entire hour.
