Perhaps the most beautiful church I have ever visited. I was deeply touched by both the welcoming community of believers and the beautiful architecture. I was most moved by the relic of the true cross of Jesus Christ.

"Take me to church," I tell a friend who is considering conversion; she took me to St Doms in SF, a Gothic Revival on a grey Sunday morning. Inside, a multiplicity of the same Maker: hovering under the ceiling, He is carved in wood and framed in dark, somber metal. Beneath Him is His blazing incarnation in marble, flanked by saints; and at the apogee, resplendent stained glass shines upon us like a crazy diamond. Unlike us polytheist Hindus with our variety of Goddesses, the monotheist Maker in this St. Dominic’s is everywhere—perhaps to keep watch on the very long lines of sinners gathered for confession. The soundtrack to confession is a solo violin playing Bach followed by a melancholy male voice. What I loved were the old-fashioned wooden confessional boxes where the dutiful enter and emerge with a new lease on life. And since I don’t believe in sin or karma, I shall come again to confess my crime just to hear out my punishment. My substack link in profile

Quiet neighborhood, very solemn atmosphere, ideal for peaceful prayers. Mass everyday (check posted schedule outside church doors). Take some Holy water for personal or spiritual use, bottles sold for $3.

Walking into St. Dominic’s always feels like a homecoming for the soul. It’s more than just a beautiful Gothic landmark in San Francisco; for me, it is a place where faith feels tangible. Between the soaring arches and the way the light hits the altar, there is a profound sense of "reverent awe" that makes it easy to quiet the noise of the city and really pray. If you’re looking for a place to deepen your spiritual life or simply need a moment of peace to reconnect with God, St. Dominic’s is a true sanctuary.

Beautiful church. Gothic construction. Worth a visit just for the architecture. The church also has great activities outside of mass including vibrant youth groups for 20-30s and 30-40s. It also has weekend volunteering activities, and bible study groups.

St. Dominic’s Catholic Church on Bush Street in San Francisco is a stunning historic landmark and a place of deep reverence. The Gothic architecture, stained glass windows, and soaring ceilings create a sense of awe and peace. The liturgies are beautifully conducted, with thoughtful homilies and moving music. It’s a serene and spiritually uplifting place to pause and reflect.

This church is awe-inspiringly beautiful. The mass was stirring. The lectrice was a bit over dramatic, felt like a play. I went to the "quiet mass"which was not quiet, given the bombastic organ music playing throughout, but it was well done, so no complaints. The homily was rousing and inspired. Very glad I went.

Beautiful architecture, very solemn mass. We attended the 11:30 Sunday mass, which was cantada. Their choir is beautiful 😍. Church has ongoing renovation. There is a gift shop where you can buy candles. Ample parking.
